U.S. Video Game Spending Hit $4.7 Billion in February 2024
Two recent releases, 'Helldivers 2' and 'Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth,' topped Circana’s chart of best-selling games for the month of February.
According to the latest report from Circana, video game spending reached $4.7 billion in February 2024, which was a 2% increase over the same time period in 2023.
In Circana’s report, “video game spending” accounted for video game content, hardware, and accessories, and “video game content” accounted for physical and digital games, DLC/MTX, and subscription spending across consoles, the cloud, mobile devices, portable devices, PC, and VR platforms. The report’s mobile spending data was provided by Sensor Tower. It’s also worth noting that Circana’s February report accounted for the time period between February 4, 2024 and March 2, 2024.
Mat Piscatella, executive director of video games at Circana, noted that “[a] 17% year-on-year increase in Mobile content spending helped offset a 30% drop in hardware [spending] during the month.”
Year-to-date video game spending in the U.S. sits at $9.78 billion for the period of December 30, 2023 to March 2, 2024.
Two recent releases dethroned Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (2023) as the best-selling video game for February 2024. Sony’s Helldivers II was the best-selling video game in February, followed by Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (2023), Skull and Bones (another game released in February), and Tekken 8 in the top five.
Helldivers II is also the best-selling game so far in 2024, followed by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, Tekken 8, Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in the top five.
Breaking down the best-selling games by platform, Helldivers II was the best-selling game on PlayStation platforms in February 2024, followed by Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III in the second and third positions, respectively.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (2023) remained the best-selling game on Xbox platforms in February, followed by Skull and Bones and Madden NFL 24 in the top three (Helldivers 2 and Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth aren’t available on Xbox platforms, as of this writing).
Finally, Mario vs. Donkey Kong (2024) was the best-selling game on Nintendo platforms in February 2024, followed by Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in the top three.
Looking at the most-played games on each platform in February, Fortnite was the most-played game on PlayStation 5 in the U.S. in February 2024 by monthly active users, followed by Call of Duty HQ and Grand Theft Auto V (Remastered) in the top three.
On Xbox Series, Fortnite was also the most-played game in the U.S. in February by monthly active users, followed by Call of Duty HQ and Palworld in the second and third positions.
Finally, on PC marketplace Steam, Helldivers II was the most-played game in the U.S. in February by monthly active users, followed by Palworld and Counter-Strike 2.
