U.S. Video Game Spending Hit $4.9 Billion in March 2024
'Dragon's Dogma II' was the best-selling video game in the U.S. in March.
According to Circana’s latest report, total U.S. spending on video game hardware, content, and accessories grew 4% year-over-year in March 2024, reaching $4.9 billion.
In Circana’s report, video game content accounted for physical and digital games, DLC/MTX, and subscriptions across consoles, the cloud, mobile devices, portable devices, PC, and VR platforms. Mobile spending data was provided by Sensor Tower.
Circana found mobile content spending increased 15% in March 2024 when compared to March 2023. Executive director of video games at Circana, Mat Piscatella, said this increase “more than offset a 32% drop in video game hardware spending” that occurred in March 2024.
Dragon’s Dogma II was the best-selling video game in the U.S. in March 2024, followed by Helldivers II, MLB: The Show 24, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (2023), and Rise of the Ronin in the top five.
While Helldivers II took the No. 2 spot on the best-selling games chart in March, it still leads the pack as the best-selling game so far in 2024. Helldivers II is followed by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (2023), Dragon’s Dogma II, Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, and MLB: The Show 24 in the top five for the best-selling games of the year thus far.
Looking at individual platforms, Circana found MLB: The Show 24 was the best-selling game on PlayStation platforms in March 2024, while Dragon’s Dogma II was the best-selling game on Xbox platforms for the month. Finally, Princess Peach: Showtime was the best-selling game on Nintendo platforms in March 2024.
Finally, breaking down the most-played games by monthly active users in the U.S., Circana found Fortnite remained the most-played game on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series in March 2024, while Helldivers II was the most played game on PC marketplace Steam for the month.
